The Third VoyageThe Muscovy Company's directors were disappointed and refused to finance a third voyage. Hudson received a surprising letter from the Dutch East India Company. This Dutch company was allowed to trade in Asia. Hudson signed a contract with the Dutch East India Company to find a passage to Asia. Hudson's ship was the Half Moon. It departed on April 6, 1609. As the weather was getting worse and worse he changed his course towards North America. He set foot in North America in July 1609. After about a month they anchored in George's Harbor and they met with native people. They were friendly and traded timber for a new mast, which they had lost during a storm. On the Half Moon, they sailed south and arrived in what today is called Maine, Massachusetts, Virginia and North Carolina. Then late in August Hudson changed the course sailing north. On September 2, the ship arrived in what today we call Manhattan Island and the explorer saw New York harbour and the mouth of the Hudson River, named after Henry Hudson. They became friendly with the natives and trade beads and knives for fruit and tobacco. Hudson decided to travel slowly along the river hoping it would connect with the Pacific Ocean. Hudson made charts, maps, draw plants and wrote about the type of soil. After a while he realized that this was not a passage to the Orient and decided to go back.Hudson wanted to stay in Newfoundland for the winter to see if he could find the "Furious Waterfall" but as they were running out of supplies they decided to go back to Europe. Hudson, that was sailing for the Dutch, decided to dock in England. The explorer sent his his voyage journals and discoveries to the Dutch company, DEIC. But when King James heard what Hudson had discovered, he was furious and thought it was illegal to work for another nation. The king considered Hudson a traitor because he made his discoveries working for Holland. The king prohibited Hudson and his crew from leaving England.Hudson charted maps of what he saw and discover.
