FOURTH AND FINAL VOYAGE

The fourth and last voyage was funded by English businessmen and the Prince of Wales
The Discovery departed on April 17, 1610. The  objective was to find the northwest passage to the Orient.
This time Hudson had lots of supplies and a bigger crew, but some of them were criminals.
He was sure the northwest passage was near the Furious Overfall west of Greenland.
Trouble started first with the  bad weather and they got stranded in Iceland for 2 weeks.
There were also problems among the sailors and they turned against Hudson.

On June 25 the ship entered the Furious Overfall that today we call the Hudson Strait. The Hudson Strait is between Baffin Island on the north and the shores of Quebec and Labrador on the south.
Another problem was the ice. Hudson was afraid it would crush the ship and the sailors were terrified and did not want to continue

The Discovery sailed west and that's how Hudson got to Hudson Bay. Hudson thought that this was the Pacific Ocean and sailed south until James Bay.

There was more trouble with the sailors that thought the captain was going in wrong the direction. They wanted to go home. Some sailors were creating problems on purpose.
In October, the ice stranded the ship in James Bay. Food was running  very low, they begun hunting but  in winter there was nothing to hunt and no fish.  The crew got sick.
After about 7 months the ice started to  break and the ship could sail again. The crew wanted to sail east to go home but Hudson did not want to give up his dream and ordered to go west.
After a while when they could not find the northern passage and they had almost no food the sailors were getting sick. There was a mutiny  and Hudson, his son and others were put on a boat with no food or water.

Only a few mutineers made it back to England after they were rescued by a fishing boat, but many of them died on their way.  Even though there was a trial, in the end they were set free.
