The magnetic compass    

                                                                                     

The new magnetic compass had a magnetized neddle
this compass showed 4-8 different directions .This helped
because it showed what direction the explorer was heading
so the explorers could reach their destination much easier.    

The traverse board

 

The traverse board helped explorers stay on track and stay organized. 
It was an earlier version of the computer. You were able to record speed and direction.
